Jonny showed genuine grit and courage after
a nasty roll in one of his heats to fight on to take two top ten finishes on
Sunday (7 June).
After equaling his best qualifying performance of the
season with the second fastest time, Jonathan looked set for a successful day
at what he regards as his 'local' track.
A strong fourth place in the
first heat appeared to confirm this - but it was in the second race that
disaster, literally struck.
"I'm not entirely sure what happened, but we
think a spring jammed my throttle open. All I do know was that I went into the
barriers flat-out!"
He almost took photographer Chris Walker with him,
and was relieved to find that Chris was unhurt and quickly able to rush to his
help.
"I was upside down in the kart and he was the only person to come
and help me," Jonny added.
Bruised and shaken, he found that he had
faired better than his kart, which was extensively damaged - forcing him to
change to a spare chassis for the first of the day's finals.
A
typically characterful drive saw him take a creditable fifth place, after
climbing as high as second place before succumbing to an aggravated wrist
injury and dropping slightly off the pace.
The effects of his crash
plagued him throughout the second final. Despite fighting on, he gradually
slipped down the order to tenth - but still earned a great deal of respect for
doing so.
It also kept him in the title hunt, now just fourteen points
off the lead, with eight points-scoring finals remaining.
"I'm in
seventh overall but it's all still very close. I now need to work hard to
recover my fitness but I'm confident that by the time we go to Whilton Mill
(4/5 July) I'll be ready."
